Learning Outcomes

Cleaning and manipulating data

Students should be able to:

o   Rename variables

o   Create categorical variables from numeric data

o   Create categorical variables from string variables

o   Recode categories of a categorical variable

o   Reverse score numeric variables

o   Create composite scores across a number of items (mean and total scores)

o   Merge datasets

o   Reshape datasets

 

Univariate Statistics in SPSS (1hr)

Learning Outcomes

Background to inferential statistics

 

Displaying and describing data (30mins)

Students should be able to:

·       Produce appropriate descriptive statistics for categorical and numeric variables

·       Create appropriate graphical summaries for categorical and numeric variables

One-sample t-test (15mins)

·       Conduct appropriate assumption testing for a one-sample t-test

·       Conduct and interpret a one-sample t-test

Chi-square goodness of fit (15mins)

·       Understand the assumptions of a chi-square goodness of fit test

·       Conduct and interpret a chi-square goodness of fit test

Familiarity with the fundamental aspects of quantitative research methods and with SPSS, including:

·       how to manually enter and import data

·       how to recode and compute variables
