Getting to know SPSS (15mins)

Students should be able to:

·       Access SPSS through AppStream and add storage

·       Work across the three different windows (data, viewer, syntax)

Entering, importing, and opening data in SPSS (15mins)

·       Understand the difference between data and variable views

·       Understand the metadata associated with variables in SPSS

·       Manually enter data into SPSS

·       Open both native and non-native files

Getting to know Stata (15mins)

·       Install and access Stata

·       Work across different windows (main window, data viewer/editor, and do files)

·       Understand the different components within the interface of the main window

Entering, importing, and opening data in Stata (15mins)

·       Understand the metadata associated with variables in Stata

·       Manually enter data into Stata

·       Open both native and non-native files

 

Cleaning and Manipulating Data in SPSS (1hr)

Cleaning and manipulating data

Students should be able to:

·       Rename variables

·       Create categorical variables from numeric data

·       Create categorical variables from string variables

·       Recode categories of a categorical variable

·       Reverse score numeric variables

·       Create composite scores across a number of items (mean and total scores)

·       Merge datasets

·       Reshape datasets
