2019: Springer Nature Author Symposium on Book Publishing

An invitation to join the Springer Nature Author Symposium at Macquarie University

Are you interested in publishing your research as a book, or book chapter perhaps? In cooperation with the Macquarie University Library, Springer Nature is hosting an Author Symposium on Book Publishing.

Presenters, William Achauer (Editorial Director) and Lucie Bartonek (Editor) will present on the following topics:

  • When is a book the best way to publish and communicate your research?
  • What to look for in a publisher and selecting a publisher
  • What commissioning editors look for in evaluating book proposals – how to improve your chances of a successful proposal
  • The publishing process – from concept to publication
  • Australian scholarly publishing in the global context

Guest Presenter: Macquarie author Dr Hui Ling Xu (Senior Lecturer, Department of International Studies) will present on her perspective and experiences in publishing the results of her research.

Your presenters:

William Achauer is Editorial Director - Books, Springer and Palgrave Macmillan based in Singapore. His remit covers Business/Management, Economics, Finance, Political Sciences, Statistics, and Law. He manages a team of publishing editors based across the entire Asia Pacific region who acquire and commission books for both the Springer, as well as the Palgrave Macmillan, imprints. William has been active on three continents (North America, Europe, and Asia) over the course of his 15 years of employment at Springer Nature.

Lucie Bartonek is Springer’s Melbourne-based Editor for Business, Economics, Politics and Law. Lucie manages commissioning publications throughout Asia-Pacific. Lucie is directly responsible for books, book series and major reference works with a focus on authors and editors in Australia and New Zealand. Lucie joined Springer in 2019 and has worked in Scholarly and Professional publishing for over five years with 500+ publications under her belt across the spectrum of academic disciplines. Lucie’s passion is in the procurement of cutting-edge research from Australia based academics to ultimately share and publish for global reach.

Hui Ling Xu has a BA in English, a Postgraduate Diploma in Education, a MA in Applied Linguistics and a PhD in Chinese Linguistics. She has an extensive tertiary teaching experience, including lecturing in the English Department of Beijing University, at the Department of Asian Studies at La Trobe University in Melbourne and currently at the Department of International Studies at MQ as a senior lecturer. Her main research interests include Chinese linguistics, linguistic typology, second language acquisition, teaching Chinese as a foreign language, in particular, language pedagogy and the use of technology-enhanced teaching and learning, intercultural communication, and heritage language education.
