Start your PhD Well: Professional communication in the research world

As a Graduate Researcher, you’ll communicate with a wide mix of stakeholders: supervisors, research participants, research support staff, industry partners, faculty leaders, reviewers, funders, regulators, and potential collaborators. This interactive workshop builds your confidence and capability to communicate clearly and strategically across those relationships, so your research progresses smoothly and your voice stays strong.

You’ll learn practical approaches to:

• Control your message by choosing the right medium, structuring key points, and responding (not reacting) to challenging communication
• Maintain agency with supervisors, colleagues and reviewers, including setting boundaries that support sustainable work–life balance
• Communicate with influence across different audiences to advance your project, build relationships and improve decision-making

You’ll leave with tools and frameworks you can apply immediately in meetings, emails, feedback, and project discussions. 

Learning outcomes:

• Plan communication to specialist and non-specialist audiences and funders
• Implement effective oral, written and online communication etiquette
• Communicate and respond to reviewer feedback
