Developing your presentation voice [on campus]

Description:

***Due to limited capacity, participants must be available to attend all three 3 hr classes plus have ~1-2 hrs during the week for “homework”***

Presenting your research through oral communication is an integral part of being a researcher – you may be asked to present your research at conferences, in group meetings, media interviews, community outreach events and, increasingly, online. And speaking clearly is an integral part of communicating your research effectively. Even when we perfect our content, our meaning may be lost due to poor delivery.

This 3-part interactive course focuses on the delivery* of oral presentations and borrows stage-craft techniques to help build your confidence in delivering oral presentations in a variety of formats: in-person, online, or pre-recorded.

This workshop is suitable for both PhD and MRes GR Candidates of all disciplines.

Course overview:

Week 1

We will look at the various parts of speech including elocution, projection, and pitch. Participants will engage in stage-craft activities and games to improve their speech.

Week 2

We will look at the additional considerations for delivering presentations online or when pre-recorded. We will also discuss dealing with nerves when presenting.

Week 3

In the final week, participants will have the opportunity to practice what they have learnt by giving a short 5-minute presentation.

*Please note that this course focuses on delivery of speech; content of speech will be discussed in passing only.
