Science Research Writing Basics Course [online]

***This course will be held online only; a Zoom link will be circulated to registered attendees the evening before the first class***

This 6-week course introduces students to the basic conventions required for writing up science research. It is aimed at Science MRES and PhD candidates who are either from an ESL background or who have recently returned to university. The course focuses on academic language and text construction at the word, sentence and paragraph level.

Priority will be given to students who can attend all 6-weeks, however for those who cannot make each week there will be an option to catch up via recordings - please email megan.brewer@mq.edu.au by week 1 if interested in this option.

 

Overview of Course:

Wk 1: Reading and Writing, Characteristics of Scientific Academic Style

Wk 2: Structuring an Argument (and using references)

Wk 3: Sentence and Paragraph Structure

Wk 4: Word Choice

Wk 5: Grammar

Wk 6: The Writing Process, Editing, Proofreading, and Feedback

 

Learning Outcomes:

Upon completion of this course students will:

  • identify the basic principles of scientific academic writing, style and form
  • identify the basic principles of editing
  • understand time management, the writing process, and how to develop a sustainable writing practice
