Survey Design: all you need to know (online)

Description:

This workshop introduces participants to best practice for designing and implementing a survey for social science research.

In this 4 hour workshop, we will we look at the place of surveys within research design, the types of data generated by surveys, core principles for developing good questions, considerations of questionnaire structures, and techniques for testing and piloting surveys. We also cover issues related to administering your survey, such as defining sample frames, sampling methodologies, and different survey formats. This discussion considers how different approaches to survey data analysis will impact your survey design decisions. Finally, we look at the principles of how to approach using software such as Qualtrics or LimeSurvey to administer an online survey.

The workshop will provide a broad introduction to the ‘art and science’ of social survey questionnaire design and give participants the knowledge, resources and confidence to develop survey questionnaires for their research projects.

Before the workshop:

  • Think about why you are considering using a survey to collect data in your research.
  • Develop a list of 3-4 research questions you think survey data can help you answer. What is it you want to know?
