Copyright Essentials

Description:

Copyright is a type of legal protection given to original intellectual outputs ranging from text works (journal articles, poems, books) to images (photographs, diagrams, charts, tables) and recordings (videos, music, podcasts). When using other people's material, researchers must consider whether their use is permitted under copyright law.

This session will provide helpful information on copyright for researchers, including:

  • practical ways researchers can manage copyright complexities and avoid obstacles and roadblocks that may arise when using their scholarly work more broadly.

  • the role of copyright exceptions in allowing researchers to use other people's material without having to seek permission and the limits that apply to those exceptions.

  • when permission from the copyright owner is required and practical alternatives where permission cannot be secured or is too expensive.
