Part 2: Friday, 5 Sept,
12:45pm – 4:00pm

Pre-requisites:

·       Familiarity with concepts of qualitative data analysis, e.g. coding, memo etc.

·       Have texts to analyse, or collected data (e.g. interviews/focus groups)

·       Data in Word or PDF that you can analyse. Please do not bring numerical datasets in Excel or CSV files.

This course aims to give you practical NVivo skills that can be applied directly to your research project. You will get the most benefits if you have texts that you can analyse.

Throughout the day, you will:

·       get to know the NVivo workspace

·       learn how to create a project

·       import data sources

·       create codes, memos, annotations

·       conduct basic queries of codes and texts

Download, Install, Set up NVivo 14:
To download NVivo 14, go to https://students.mq.edu.au/support/technology/software/nvivo
Follow the NVivo installation steps, and set up NVivo on your laptop or hard drive of your computer. Please do not download and install NVivo when you are logging into the MQ network using "app stream" or you are in a "virtual lab". Once you have installed NVivo, copy the NVivo licence key (16 character/number sequence) which is provided in the installation steps, to activate NVivo.

If you encounter difficulties downloading NVivo, contact
IT Service Desk.

If you have started a project in NVivo 12 and want to continue using NVivo 12, you do not have to download and install NVivo 14. There is not much difference between the two versions and you will be supported on using NVivo 12 during this course. If you want to use NVivo 14, follow the download and installation steps above. Your NVivo 12 file will be automatically converted to NVivo 14 format and you will not lose any data. Once your file has been converted to NVivo 14, you will not be able to convert it back to NVivo 12.

What to bring:

·    Your device with NVivo 14 already downloaded and installed on your laptop/computer.

·    Interview data or texts that you wish to analyse. Two or three interview texts/interview transcripts/journal articles are sufficient.  Please read over your texts a couple of times beforehand so you are familiar with your data, and take some time to think about how you want to analyse it (themes, concepts, issues, categories etc.);

·    Please have at least two large screens visible for the workshop, eg connect your laptop to an external monitor or use two devices that you can log in to Zoom: one to view the instructor screen and the other for you to work on NVivo. This way you can share your screen with the instructor if you need assistance during the workshop.

Mac users: NVivo on Windows and Mac are separate software applications with different project file formats, features, and layouts. Please beware this workshop is designed for PC users. If you would like some online resources for NVivo, please email gr.development@mq.edu.au.
