2021: Writing for Publication in the Humanities (online via Zoom)

Description:

The aim of this four-part workshop is to introduce HDR candidates in the Humanities to writing for publication. The workshop covers key components of research writing for publication, such as developing a persuasive argument, communicating complex concepts, understanding the elements of structure, critically reading and reviewing literature, learning the principles of editing and peer review, and developing a sustainable writing practice.

During the four sessions we will cover:

  • the role of academic publishing
  • the difference between thesis writing and writing for publication, and how to redevelop content from your thesis for journal publication
  • how to identify the core elements of a well-written paper
  • how to develop a strong argument in a paper for publication and articulate key contributions to the field
  • how to create coherent structure
  • what journal editors and reviewers look for
  • how to target and analyse appropriate journals including developing audience/reader awareness
  • how to deal with reviewer feedback.

The course is run as a series of integrated, interactive workshops. Students will be asked to do some reading and research as homework, and share samples of their own work.
