2021: SPSS Introductory Workshop (Zoom)

This SPSS Introductory workshop will be delivered across two mornings and will introduce students to the SPSS statistics program. It will combine basic information on the relevance of quantitative research methods with hands-on practice of SPSS. 

Part 1: Tuesday 21 September from 1pm to 4:15pm

Part 2: Wednesday 22 September from 1pm to 4:15pm

Please note: You must be able to attend both Part 1 and Part 2 of this workshop. Zoom access instructions will be provided closer to workshop date. 

**Please ensure you have SPSS set up on your own laptop prior to the workshop. This can be accessed via Appstream, and if you encounter any difficulties, please contact the IT Service desk on the Ground Floor of 17 Wally's Walk or by emailing OneHelp@mq.edu.au** 

Topics covered will include:

·         an overview of quantitative research methods 

·         types of variables

·         setting up SPSS and different types of SPSS files

·         entering data into SPSS by hand (e.g. from paper surveys)

·         importing data into SPSS from other file formats (e.g. excel or text files from online surveys)

·         cleaning up data and data manipulation (e.g. combining individual items to make a scale)

·         appropriate ways of displaying data (simple numeric and graphical summaries)

All workshop participants will be using SPSS in the training room throughout the workshop, allowing for hands-on experience of SPSS. Simple course notes will be provided.

Pre-requisites

No prior experience with SPSS is assumed, although basic computer literacy and a basic understanding of mathematics are needed.

Some familiarity with research methods (i.e. devising a research question, the basics of conducting research) is expected.

Please ensure you have accessed SPSS via Appstream prior to the workshop.
